The Roots of Enlightenment

The Roots of Enlightenment

I had the title for this image before I completed the drawing, but the drawing did not emerge from the title. The sketch itself began, as such things often do, around the middle of the picture. It was, at first, going to be a tree stump, but from there I decided to merge plant, animal, and mineral, as well as add the technological. The proto-animal and plant form a broad base, upon which more structured plant forms fossilize into stone, brick, and human constructions. As if to complete the allegorical title, a lighthouse stands—unbalanced—upon the top.
